
Matthew the Councillor

Matthew Lock, affectionately known as Matty, was a 19-year-old Labour councillor from Maghull, Merseyside, who tragically passed away in September 2023. Despite his young age, he had already made a significant impact on his community and beyond.




Political involvement
Matty was a dedicated member of the Labour Party in Sefton and Merseyside. He served as a town councillor in Maghull and as a parish councillor in Lydiate, demonstrating his commitment to local governance and community service. His efforts were particularly focused on improving local infrastructure and supporting youth development initiatives.

Community engagement
Known for his boundless enthusiasm, Matty was deeply involved in community activities. He participated in local clean-up campaigns and was recognised for his proactive approach to community improvement. His dedication to his community earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and constituents.

Matthew's tributes and legacy
Following his sudden passing, tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. A memorial fund was established by a kind resident to honour his memory, and contributions were put towards naming the Underpass walkway in Maghull Town Centre after Matthew, as he would often volunteer his time and energy to help maintain it by clearing the rubbish, cutting back overgrown hedges, removing graffiti and painting it.
In recognition of his dedication to the community, Maghull Town Council established the 'Matthew Lock Youth Award' to honour young individuals who contribute voluntarily to Maghull and its communities.
Matty Lock's untimely loss has left a void within the community, but his legacy continues to inspire those who knew him and those who benefit from the initiatives he championed.
Angela Rayner
The Deputy Leader of the Labour Party paid tribute to Matty's contributions to his community, stating, "Matty did so much for his community. My love and prayers are with his friends and family."

Bill Esterson
The Labour MP for Sefton Central described Matty as a "lovely young man" who had achieved much and had many plans for the future, expressing his thoughts for Matty's family during this time.
