
​Matthew Lock, affectionately known as Matty, was a 19-year-old Labour councillor from Maghull, Merseyside, who tragically passed away in September 2023. Despite his young age, he had already made a significant impact on his community and beyond.​

Following his sudden passing, tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. Labour Deputy Leader Angela Rayner expressed her sorrow, stating that Matty "did so much for his community," and extended her condolences to his family and friends .
A memorial fund was established to honour his memory and contributions were put towards naming the Underpass or subway in Maghull Square after him as he would be often found cleaning this, cutting back the vegetation and removing graffiti.

In recognition of his dedication to the community, the Maghull Town Council established the "Matthew Lock Youth Award" to honour young individuals who contribute voluntarily to Maghull and its communities .​
Matty Lock's untimely death left a void in his community, but his legacy continues to inspire those who knew him and those who benefit from the initiatives he championed.
